We are writing to ensure that you are aware of the internal coordination requirements for the Florida Department of Health’s 2014-2015 James & Esther King Biomedical Research Program (targeting tobacco-related diseases) and Bankhead-Coley Cancer Research Program (targeting cancer research in general). This is a very short deadline due to the timeline given by the sponsor – internal LOIs are due by this Wednesday, July 23, 2014, as described below.
This year’s solicitations for the James & Esther King program and the Bankhead-Coley program both cover multiple topic areas and funding mechanisms. Research proposals may address the following topics:
- Prevention and Treatment
- Health Disparities
- Screening
- Tobacco Use (James & Esther King program only)
- Obesity
- Treatment-Related Morbidities
- Technology Transfer Feasibility (TTF)
- Investigational New Drug (IND) or Investigational Device Exemption (IDE)
Applications may be made under four distinct funding mechanisms:
- Discovery Science (up to $1,500,000 total costs over 3 years)
- Infrastructure (up to $1,500,000 total costs over 3 years) – UF is limited to one Infrastructure proposal per program (2 total – one for James & Esther King, one for Bankhead-Coley)
- Clinical Research (up to $2,000,000 total costs over 5 years)
- Bridge (up to $100,000 total costs over 6 months)
In addition to the limitation on the number of Infrastructure proposals UF may submit, all proposals to either program with overlapping key personnel must not contain financial or scientific overlap. As a result, those applying under any mechanism must submit an internal letter of intent by Wednesday, July 23 as described in the links below, clearly specifying the program, funding mechanism, and the names/affiliations of all key personnel to be proposed.
