Emerging Research Scholarship PhD Program
The University of Florida is at the forefront of AI research, spurred in part by our $80 million research and education partnership with NVIDIA, a world leader in accelerated computing, leading to a new data center that houses the fastest supercomputer in higher education.
Recognizing the increasing need for a new biomedical workforce, we are pleased to announce the creation of ten additional PhD positions in the College of Medicine under the auspices of the Office of Research. The Emerging Research Scholars PhD positions will be allocated by the Senior Associate Dean for Research every two years, focusing on emerging areas in research requiring training of additional workforce.
These positions are allocated to PhD students interested in pursuing applications of AI and data science (ERS-AI) in various domains. The program will support 100% of the student’s tuition and stipend In Year 1 and 50% of their tuition and stipend in Year 2. ERS-AI program mentors and their departments will be responsible for the balance of student support in Year 2 and Years 3-5.
ERS-AI students are enrolled in either the COM Biomedical Sciences, Health Outcomes and Biomedical Informatics, or Neuroscience PhD programs. They participate fully in the program to which they are admitted and also receive special training opportunities. Key features of the program include:
- Artificial Intelligence Boot Camp prior to the start of classes in August
- Building Trust and Sharing Narratives: science communication training experience through the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science
- Special track for ERS-AI students, including an AI-focused journal club. This journal club meets the BMS requirement for a fall semester journal club.
- Support for ERS-AI students in submitting an independent major grant (NIH F31, NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, or similar) while working with an ERS-AI mentor
- Cohort-based professional development activities
- Mentor matching within a pool of highly engaged faculty (current ERS-AI Program PhD Mentors)
