Grant Writers' Seminars
The Office of Research is hosting two grant writing seminars on October 3rd and 4th 2024 on the University of Florida Main Campus. These seminars comprehensively address practical, conceptual, and rhetorical aspects of writing competitive grant proposals.
About the program
The Grant Writers’ Seminars provide training for researchers in how to write a better grant proposal.
The seminars emphasize the principles and fundamentals of good grantsmanship, as well as practical tips and strategies that are designed to optimize the competitiveness of an application.

Write Winning Grant Proposals
An all-day seminar on October 3rd, Write Winning Grant Proposals teaches participants to write competitive NIH grants that present their project clearly, compellingly, and accessibly for different audiences.
- General proposal information: timelines, developing an idea, using NIH tools, etc.
- Application preparation: grant mechanism selection, identifying study sections, the review process
- Development of specific aims
- Development of research strategy
- Development of additional sections: facilities and other resources, budget justification, data management, etc.

NIH Renewals and Resubmissions
NIH Renewals and Resubmissions, a half-day seminar on October 4th, explains how to maximize the likelihood of success when proposing a renewal request or resubmitting an application by introducing practical, conceptual, and rhetorical strategies.
- Practical considerations when applying for a renewal – e.g. Renewal or new proposal?, Timing of renewal submission
- Optimizing proposal sections for renewal applications
- NIH policy and officer roles
- Analyzing Summary statements and reviews
- How to respond to reviewers

Presented by John D. Robertson, Ph.D.
Dr. John Robertson holds a Doctorate in Pharmacology/Toxicology and has been an Associate Member at Grant Writers’ Seminars & Workshops since 2010. In 2017 he became the Managing Member. He has been the recipient of competitive extramural funding from both the NIH and non-federal sources. He has authored 30 peer-reviewed journal articles and three book chapters. In addition, he has been a member of grant review panels, a reviewer for a number of biomedical journals, and served on editorial boards. He has also been routinely recognized for excellence in teaching.
