The Thomas H. Maren Junior Investigators Fund provides funding for promising young faculty in the College of Medicine. The 2022 Junior Faculty Award amount is $50,000 per year for two years (2nd year contingent on 1st year progress and availability of funds).

Eligibility

Eligible faculty must be:

  • an Assistant Professor whose primary academic appointment is in the College of Medicine
  • within four years of first faculty appointment at the time of Maren Award (April 2022)
  • currently a principal investigator of a currently active nationally peer reviewed research grant (i.e., NIH, NSF, FL DOH, ACS, JDRF, etc.)

Letter of Intent Instructions

Submit Letter of Intent (LOI) package as a single PDF document no later than Monday, September 20, 2021.

  • LOI requirements:
    • One page document with name of candidate, current department and date of hire as faculty, as well as a brief summary of proposed project (300 word maximum, 11pt font minimum, single space)
    • Biosketch (NIH format) including current and past funding
  • Name your file ‘lastname_firstname_Maren2022_LOI.pdf’
  • LOIs will be reviewed and full applications will be invited in mid-October, 2021
  • Invited full applications (see below) will be due 8:00am Monday, December 13, 2021

Full Application Requirements

  1. Cover sheet with title of proposal, PI name, PI title, PI department
  2. Table of contents with items below and page numbers
  3. Lay summary of research project (1 page maximum)
  4. Project title, hypothesis, aims/objectives, and significance (1 page maximum)
  5. Technical summary of research approach, data analysis, anticipated results, potential challenges and alternative approaches (2 page maximum)
  6. One year budget/budget justification (1 page maximum)
    • allowable expenses include supplies, core facility fees and salaries for technicians, graduate students, post-docs
    • non-allowable expenses include PI salary, equipment, travel
  7. Biosketch (NIH format) including current and past funding
  8. Signed letter of support from department chair
  9. Abstract(s) of currently active grant(s)

Requirements of Award

  1. Awardees are required to acknowledge the support of the Thomas Maren Junior Investigator Fund on all future publications.
  2. A yearly progress report is required for the duration of the awardee’s faculty position.
  3. Awardees may be required to give an informal presentation to Maren family representatives.
  4. Funding must be expended within the funding period (no extensions) and are not transferable to another institution.
